12 Inspirational Quotes of Strength and Courage by Reverend Billy Graham.
It was a normal Sunday afternoon and I was sitting in our little homeschool room planning my son’s first week of first grade.
Within a matter of minutes, the sky turned from cloudy to black. A North Carolina summer storm was upon us.
Being a New Yorker, I am not quite used to these quickly coming and going storms. They are beautiful to look at from the warmth of my home, but you don’t want to get caught in one. In a minute, you'd be soaked to the skin. Some last a while, others come and go fairly quickly.
As I watched the rain start to pour and the trees began to do their storm dance - swaying violently back and forth. In that moment, I thought that storms in life are sometimes like these North Carolina storms.
These “life storms” often hit you quickly. A doctor’s report, a teacher’s meeting bringing up concerns for your child, a diagnosis, a personal or spiritual battle . . . they come quick and appear out of nowhere.
I watched this storm from our school room window. The leaves turned inside out. The branches were practically bent over from the power of the wind and rain. But, as you looked down the trunk of the tree, the movement became less and less violent.
As women, we often face unbelievable situations and we often hear, “You are just so strong.” When those words hit you, if you are anything like me, you say to yourself, “If they only knew.”
We face the world every day with a smile and a heart to please, when in reality, our insides and our hearts are doing their storm dance, swaying violently back and forth. Our branches are bent over by the power of the wind and rain. We don’t feel strong. We feel week. We feel like we are about to break.
To survive these storms, we need a strong root system.
Colossians 2:6-7 says, “And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”
During these storms, our roots must grow into Him. They must be watered daily with the water of the word. (John 4:10-14) If we are to survive life’s storms, we must be planted in Him and watered through the Scriptures.
I’ve been studying the life and work of Reverend Billy Graham. His words bring clarity and the simplicity of the Gospel.
