8 Nightly Routines to Ensure a Peaceful Morning.
Mornings can be hectic. Especially Monday mornings after a long weekend of family, friends, and fun. But your mornings don’t have to be a jumbled mess of stress. There are things that I do before bed each night that ensure a super peaceful and stress-free morning.
The Scriptures often speak of the beauty of mornings . . .
"Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22-23)
How can we appreciate the faithfulness of The Lord each morning when we are scrambling to get the kids in the shower?
"But as for me, I shall sing of Your strength; Yes, I shall joyfully sing of Your lovingkindness in the morning," (Psalm 59:16)
I can hear you now - "Sing in the morning, Erika! I have breakfast to take care of, laundry to do, and the dishwasher has to be emptied! Who has time to sing?" David had time to sing JOYFULLY in the morning to his Lord. And if we take a minute, we can do all of those chores, with worship music playing in the background while we sing to awaken the morning!
"He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed." (Isaiah 50:4)
How can we listen to the Lord's instructions for the day when we can't decide which outfit to wear and our hair is driving us crazy?
"Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed." (Mark 1:35)
Jesus set a beautiful example for us. He got up early and prayed. He didn't clean the sink, take out the dog, or do a load of laundry. He started His day in prayer.
"Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn." (Psalm 57:8)
I love David. He is totally my Bible Hero! In Psalm 59 he awakened the day with singing. In Psalm 57, he took out his instruments and awakened the day with music.
There are many Scriptures that speak about the morning; that precious time before the world comes calling on us. We can create a beautiful atmosphere in our homes each day. An atmosphere of music, worship, prayer, and peace that can carry us through the day.
Here are the 8 things I do each night to ensure a peaceful morning.
1. Tidy up the kitchen.
There is nothing worse (for me) than waking up to a dirty kitchen. Dishes piled in the sink. A dishwasher full of dirty dishes. Pots and pans on the stove. It brings me such stress.
I clean my kitchen at night. Dirty dishes are either hand washed or put in the dishwasher. Leftovers are in containers in the refrigerator. The counter tops are wiped down and the floors are swept. Before bed, the dishwasher goes on. That way in the morning, my son can empty it as part of his chores. I do this each night and I wake up to a clean kitchen.
Instead of doing dirty dishes in the morning, read your Bible and spend time with The Lord.
2. Do the laundry.
I do not do laundry in the mornings. It is another time-consuming activity that doesn't need to be added to the morning. I don't do laundry every day but when I do, it is done at night. When we wake up, we have clean clothes and towels ready to start a new week/day.
Instead of doing laundry in the morning, you can replace that time listening to worship music or Inscribing the Word.
3. Lay out your clothes for the next day.
I always lay out my clothes and the clothes for my son the night before. This helps him know exactly what he needs to put on in the morning and it prevents me from the thirty-minute-morning-runway-show trying to find the perfect outfit!
Instead of trying on a hundred outfits in the morning, spend that time writing in your journal and making a list of things you are grateful for.
4. Prepare and pack lunches.
I pack lunch for my son and I the night before. That way, we just grab lunch and go without worrying about what we want to eat.
Instead of packing and making lunch, take a morning walk and just thank The Lord for His blessings. Thank Him for waking you up to see another sunrise and for blessing the day with His mercy and grace.
5. Make meals for the week.
If I don't have a show on a Sunday night (I own and operate a non-profit community theater in my offline life, and we do many live productions throughout the year), I will prepare dinners for the week. I really enjoy cooking on a late Sunday afternoon. It is calming to me. I will prepare dinners for the week and a few lunches.
Put on some worship music while you are cooking and you will feel such peace. It is a beautiful time for me as the sun is setting, the music is playing and I am preparing for the week. It truly brings peace to my life.
I am addicted (like I think I have a serious problem) to adult coloring books. I used to love coloring as a kid, and this year when adult coloring became 'the thing', I jumped on board big time.
I color in the evenings when I am not working. I put my son to sleep, turn off the television, and I color. I find that even five minutes of coloring centers me and gets me focused on the following day. It quiets my mind and brings peace to my heart.
If coloring isn't your thing, then find a hobby you love and take some time in the evenings to focus on that hobby. Take a long bath, paint your nails, color your hair . . . do something for YOU that quiets your mind and spirit and allows you to focus on a new day.
7. Schoolwork and homework are done and put away.
Being a homeschooling mom, school is always on my mind. I try to have all of Asher's lessons planned out the night before along with any other activities he needs for class the next day. By having his lessons done at night, we can wake up, have breakfast, and get right to work on the days activities.
If you aren't a homeschooling parent, have your kids do their homework at night. I remember as a student stressing to finish forgotten homework at the breakfast table. It was always a headache and it was never completed with my best effort. Let's strive to get our homework and lessons done the night before so the mornings can be used for time together as a family.
Instead of rushing to finish homework assignments or lesson plans in the morning, take that time and talk as a family. Talk to your kids. Ask them what they are most looking forward to in their day.
8. Journal and Prayer.
Right before I close my eyes I write in my journal and I pray. I thank God for the day and pray for the one ahead. I ask for peace to go before me and stress to be far behind me. I write in my journal and point out key parts of the day; mostly what I am thankful for.
Journaling and prayer before bed keeps me centered and quiets my heart in preparation for the day ahead. Add a cup of Sleepy Time Tea and you are set for a peaceful night's rest.
I strive to do these eight steps each night to create a peaceful morning. We live in such a stressful world. Kids are stressed. Have you noticed that? Kids are STRESSED! I don't want that for my son. I want him to wake up each day to a peaceful home filled with the love, joy and peace of God.
I know we all have things to accomplish in our busy mornings and sometimes the steps I outlined just aren't possible. But we can try to create mornings that are peaceful, joyful, full of song and like David's, filled with worship and thanksgiving to God.
