What's in a name?
When I was a little girl my parents taught us when you name a child you give them a nature. All throughout the Bible, you see the names of ordinary people living out the extraordinary meanings to their names.
My name, ERIKA, means mighty queen or powerful ruler. I have always been a leader and often live up to the meaning behind my name.
When my son was born, we knew we wanted to name him ASHER meaning happy, fortunate, and blessed. And boy, is his name his nature!
When I decided to really commit to writing, I wanted a name for this blog that would nature it. I wanted a name that would give meaning and purpose behind the writings you find here.
Originally, the name of this site was simply ERIKA MICHELLE. I purchased the domain, started creating the logos, wrote a few introductory posts, and created some fun printable for the opening week of the site . . . all using the name Erika Michelle.
After a few weeks of toying around with the name, I told Steven that I wanted to change it. He asked me why; after all, we both thought ERIKA MICHELLE was a great name for a site.
I changed it because it was too much “me”. It was too much “Erika”. I am rather introverted and to constantly promote “Erika Michelle” was too much for me. I felt like I would always be “Look at me! Look at me!”, instead of “Look to Jesus! Look to Jesus!”
I hated it, and deleted everything associated with Erika Michelle. Don’t get me wrong, I love my name, I just didn’t want it to be the center of everything I write, promote, share, and design.
But what to name this place that the Lord was orchestrating?
We were sitting by the pool with Asher last summer, and Steven and I started talking about our childhood’s. What our nicknames were, our tastes in music, our best subjects in school, and our favorite movies and television shows. Keri Russell’s FELICITY was a favorite for both of us, and it was like a bolt of lighting hit my spirit . . . THE FELICITY BEE.
The word FELICITY means the quality or state of great happiness. It can mean happiness, joy, joyousness, BLISS, DELIGHT, cheerfulness, CONTENTEDNESS, satisfaction, pleasure.
We go through so many life-seasons where we don’t see felicity. We don’t see bliss, delight, satisfaction, or pleasure. We aren’t in a “state of great happiness”.
But Paul tells us in Philippians 4:11-12, “Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Even if we can’t see seasons of felicity, my prayer for everyone who reads this site is to find contentment in whatever state you are in. My prayer is that you find joy and bliss in HIS Strength. My hope is that you find find the sparkle in the light of HIS glorious grace.
My childhood nickname was BEE. My dad originated the name and it has stuck these thirty-something years. But at this stage in my life, it is more than just a name. Mary Kay Ash is quoted to have said,
"Aerodynamically, the bumble bee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumble bee doesn't know it so it goes on flying anyway.”
Whether that is true or not, I will not argue here. Let's leave that to the scientists. I do remember reading that the bumblebee's wings are to small for it's body so the sheer fact that the bee can fly is a miracle.
I have had many seasons where I have been so pressured and weighed down by the good and the bad of life, but my little wings keep flapping and through it all . . . I fly! And so can you!
Through the ups and downs, when you were down and out, when the world was weighing you down, when things were so good you couldn't comprehend . . . you continued to fly! And you, my friend, are a miracle!
I wanted the BEE to remind us that when we don’t feel like flying or when we don’t feel like we can soar with wings of eagles, we must wait upon the LORD and He shall renew our strength; we will mount up with wings as eagles; we will run, and not be weary; and we will walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31
A Year Later.
Almost a year later, I am so happy that I changed the name of this site to THE FELICITY BEE. Every day I hear from women all over the world. They tell me stories of strength. They tell me how they fly and sparkle even when the wind is blowing and the sun ceases to shine. They tell me how through HIS strength, they are overcoming seasons of despair with a quiet and calm felicity.
May we take this journey together as we discover that we can all be FELICITY BEE'S journeying through life full of HIS joy, content in HIS will, full of bliss and miracles . . . with a touch of sparkle!
