It is February and this month at The Felicity Bee, we are focusing on Choosing Life (Deuteronomy 30:19) and Embracing Love. (1 Corinthians 13:8)
The world is full of love this month. The Christmas decorations weren't even put away, and Target had pink and red candy hearts everywhere. Walmart had the teddy bears and fake roses proudly displayed next to the 70% off Christmas decorations before we could even clean up our New Year's champagne.
Every year, the world tries to push their definition of love on us leaving us feeling . . . . SO OVER IT!
If you are single, you hate this time of year because . . . . Well . . . You are single, and the world makes you feel like you are missing out on something.
If you are in a relationship/married/engaged, you empty your pockets trying to find that perfect gift, more chocolate, or another teddy bear holding a fake rose that will end up in the garbage or the back of the closet on February 15.
I don't mean to sound cynical .
I LOVE LOVE. I truly do.
I love feeling loved, having someone to love, and I love to love others. I even love the Russel Stover's candy chocolate boxes (which I buy for myself throughout the whole season if I'm being honest! 😉). I am dating a wonderful man who loves Jesus more than he loves me and has shown me true love. So I’m not being cynical when it comes to Valentine’s Day.
BUT, I am SO OVER how the world teaches us to LOVE. It's fake, it's phony, it is not God.
I would much rather EMBRACE the love the Bible teaches, than the love of the world.
GOD’S LOVE IS ETERNAL. THE WORLD’S LOVE IS RUN BY EMOTION.
We live in a society of “Anything Goes”. When it comes to the community theater we run, Steven and I have often said, “Anything Goes is the name of a musical. It is not the motto of this theater.” The same can be said in life.
The world teaches us that love is run by our emotions. Whatever feels good at the moment is what we love. Whoever gives us the warm fuzzies is who we love. If something doesn’t “feel” right any longer, we run to find something else to love.
God’s love, however, is eternal. It is not based on feelings or emotions. It is not based on an “Anything Goes” mentality. Ephesians 1:4-5 says that God adopted us in Him before we were even born. He loved us before sin came into the world. He loved us after sin came into the world. He loved us when we sinned against Him, and He loved us enough to forgive us. That is an eternal love.
GOD’S LOVE IS SELFLESS. THE WORLD’S LOVE IS SELFISH.
The world’s love is defined as “what can you do for me, and what can you give me?” It is a love that requires something from us. It says, “If you can no longer do for me . . . I’ll leave. If you can no longer give me what I need . . . I’ll find someone who can.” It is selfish, and promotes selfishness.
God’s love, however, is the most selfless type of love. It is the love that “sends His only begotten Son, that whosoever would believe in Him would not perish, but have everlasting life.” It is a love that no matter how far from Him we go, His love is always there to pull us home.
GOD’S LOVE IS FREE. THE WORLD’S LOVE COSTS.
There is a price to pay for the world’s love. Men are encouraged to buy the most expensive jewelry to “show her how much you love her”. Victoria’s Secret is sprayed with pink and red this month for women to buy what their men will love to see them in. Even our children are programmed with “if your parents love you, they will buy you this toy”. Societies version of love costs a pretty penny.
But God’s love is free for anyone who wants it. (Romans 6:23) He stands at the door of our hearts and knocks. (Revelation 3:20) He desires communion with us. He desires us, and the love He has to give comes at no charge.
