Why I Started Using Essential Oils

Most people joined the Essential Oil bandwagon many years ago when Pinterest was all abuzz with these little gems. I was a bit different. I was a little late to the party. But that's okay! At least I showed up! HA!

A few years ago, I started getting sick for no apparent reason. I would get these little coughing and sneezing episodes and had no idea why. A friend of mine told me that her son had the same thing. It would come and go and no one knew why. Her searching led her to Glade Plug Ins. Her son would get a major allergic reaction whenever he came into a room with a Glade Plug In. I realized that the same was true for me!

Whenever I put a Glade Plug In in the wall, I broke out into a major allergic reaction. It started there and moved to those beautiful candles I had all over the house. After doing some research, I found that I was unknowingly pumping my home with chemicals. I was lathering my body with chemicals. I was cleaning my dishes with chemicals.  AHHHH!!!!

I should preface this post by saying that I am NOT in any way, shape, or form a “go green” hipster whose clothing is made of hemp. That is not me. If that is you . . . do you! Own it! But that lifestyle has never been one that I claim . . . still isn’t. 😊

But when my brother-in-law and sister were diagnosed with cancer on the same day, I knew I needed to make some changes in my household.

WHY I BEGAN USING ESSENTIAL OILS

As I said, my brother-in-law and sister were diagnosed with cancer on the same day and as a family we immediately began making some changes. We threw away all of our plastic food storage and switched to glass.

I got rid of all the candles and air fresheners that I would liberally spray all over my home. And I slowly began changing to all natural skin care products that I learned to make myself.

A cancer scare is one that, unfortunately, most of us can relate to, and it caused us to make some major changes in our family in regards to our health and wellness. Plus, I was getting sick. My candles kept giving me a scratchy throat that caused me to cough and sneeze. I was breaking out from my skin care products. It was just a mess.  I knew we needed to change.

I had been seeing recipes for Essential Oils on Pinterest and thought I’d give them a try.

THE SCIENCE and SAFETY BEHIND ESSENTIAL OILS.

There is quite a scientific background with Essential Oils. I urge you to check out these links before you jump right in buying oils. These oils are strong, and if you don’t know what you are using them for, could cause some issues.

I remember when I first started, I was so excited I began diffusing oils, wearing oils, and smelling oils constantly. I ended up getting sick because my body was overwhelmed.

Learn about Essential Oils before you jump right in. There are some great books and articles that will give you some guidance on the science behind these Heavenly gifts. When it comes to my personal safety, I DO NOT ingest oils at all. I only use oils topically and through a diffuser. I do not feel comfortable ingesting them.

WHERE DO YOU START?

There are so many oils out there it can be tricky to know where to start.  Switching to a non-toxic lifestyle can be overwhelming. My friend Sanae told me, “Start small and then grow. Make small changes first.” She was absolutely right.

The first change I made was in my skin care and beauty routine. Then I moved into all-natural cleaners. I found seven oils that became my go-to for most of my everyday activities.  Here is a list of seven oils I cannot live without . . .

1. Lemon

Lemon is excellent for cleaning the house and getting off sticky messes. It’s natures “Goo Gone”! It is also a fantastic mood booster and fights colds.

2. Lavender

I read somewhere that Lavender is the Swiss army knife of essential oils and it is so true. Of course, we all know that Lavender is soothing and can help you sleep better, but it also is an incredible stress reliever, anti itch remedy, and wonderful in the diffuser.

3. Peppermint

Peppermint eases occasional stomach issues. It wards off bugs and spiders, and if you are into making your own toothpaste it is essential! I love diffusing Peppermint as it brings clarity and alertness.

4. Frankincense

Frankincense. Yes, like in the Bible. This is my FAVORITE oil of all time. I will eventually write a whole post on Frank. I diffuse it as it fights depression and the blues. I use it daily in my skin care routine, and it even helped to get rid of a small mole I had on my shoulder. It’s amazing and I can’t say enough about it!

5. Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is fabulous for making your own “Vicks Vapor Rub” without the chemicals. It is incredible for sinus related issues, easing stuffy noses, and respiratory issues. (Not to be used around small children.)

6. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree is another top favorite oil. I use it in my skin care routine and face wash. It is a great for acne breakouts. It is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal and can help heal cuts, scrapes, and burns.

7. Bergamont Oil

Bergamont is a fantastic citrus oil that promotes well-being. It is an anti-depressant when diffused. It naturally reduces stress, and boosts your mood. When used on your skin it can reduce scars and acne.

WHICH COMPANY DO YOU USE?

This is the big debate. I have seen outright fights break about among women claiming their company is the best. I won't engage in that kind of behavior. I will say that I have used oils from MLM’s and I find that the cost of them isn’t viable for my family. They are just too expensive for me.

I use and stand by EDEN’S GARDEN essential oils. I am not being compensated in any way to share my love of this company. I just want you to know how amazing they are!

All of their products are 100% pure. They add no bases, fillers, additives, to any of their oils. Each are in their purest form possible.

I love the quality of their oils and love that I don’t have to go through a third party to purchase them. Their website is beautiful and so informative. Definitely check them out!

WHAT YOU NEED TO GET STARTED

Edens Garden provides some great synergy blends (blends of various oils rolled into one) that are a great place to start. Pick one or two oils you enjoy, and start there.  Here are a few kits I recommend.

I would recommend a diffuser. A diffuser is one of the safest ways to use oils. You use water and oils and can add some beautiful scents, and immune boosting oils into your home. Here are a few diffusers I have used, purchased, and highly recommend.

If you are going to use an oil on your body, you must dilute it with a carrier oil (coconut oil, avocado oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil). Do not put an oil directly onto your skin without a carrier.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I wanted to write this post to encourage you to bring God’s World into your home. Natural Living is something I NEVER thought I would be into, but after losing my brother-in-law to cancer and realizing that life is so short, I want to take whatever precautions I can to keep my family healthy and safe.

The Bible says in 2 Peter 1:3, “He gives us everything we need for life and for holy living. He gives it through His great power. As we come to know Him better, we learn that He called us to share His own shining-greatness and perfect life.”

HE gives us all we need for life and godliness. I believe that Essential Oils are a gift from God to be used wisely to help us live a healthy life. I do not believe that are a substitute for the power of a mighty, healing God. My faith is always in the God who performs miracles. I am just thankful that in so many areas of life, I can replace man-made with God-made.

I will be sharing my recipes, skin care tips, and more here at The Felicity Bee as we learn to live a life that SPARKLES from the inside . . . out.

Are you into Essential Oils? Do you have any favorite recipes? Anything you'd like to learn about them? I'd love to hear about them in the comments!!!
